JACradio Innovators sets out to showcase the music of artists who have made a unique contribution to popular music.

As 2009 draws to an end, ‘best of the decade’ lists are appearing on every blog, radio station and music related media source. One artist that will feature strongly on many a list is the enigmatic and innovative Icelandic songstress Björk.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir, simply known as Björk (for obvious reasons), will be remembered as one of the most influential artists of the early 21st century.  From her beginnings in cult Icelandic band The Sugarcubes to the groundbreaking 1997 album Homogenic  to the experimental Vespertine, Björk’s contribution to the Indie music scene has been well documented.

And with a back catalogue that boasts such stunning tracks as the beautiful ‘Hyper-Ballad’, the emotional ‘Joga’ and the haunting ‘Bachelorette’ it’s not hard to see why. Her powerful and interesting song writing is complimented by hyper-emotive vocals and revolutionary production.

More than just a musician, Björk has been at the forefront of artistic experimentalism of the last decade. Constantly challenging the boundaries of culture (both popular and otherwise), Björk’s contribution to music, film and performance will be remembered for years to come.

This month JACradio celebrates the musical achievements of everyone’s favourite Icelander, Björk.
